. in terms of what we're going to do on this subject. the gun lobby, the nra at least, in some ways is a victim of their own success. their political m.o. is to prevent anybody from even bringing up gun control legislation, to make it seem politically impossible to even broach the subject. and so they're not used to having the debate, their side of the argument, with powerful, motivated, organized proponents of the opposite view. in other words, they have been so successful at shutting down any possible debate over gun control in this country that they now seem legitimately surprised that there might be a legitimate debate in this country over gun control. their reaction today to their meeting with vice president joe biden in washington was that they said they were disappointed. that was their word, "dispointed," that one of the subjects of discussion was reforming gun laws. what did you think you were there to talk about? this is the list of gun owner groups and gun advocacy groups that vice president biden met with today. in this ongoing series of meetings he's having toward produ

the american people, including nra members, including gun owners, are saying we should be doing something. one of the things that we noticed, most people, nra members, gun owners, didn't know that everybody was not going through a background check. they didn't realize that 40% of gun owners are getting their guns without going through a background check. these are all law-abiding citizens when they go to buy their guns. why isn't everybody else? that's what we're fighting for, and the president is not trying to be a king. he's trying to save lives. >> we're getting a mixed message from the right, but here is the crazier talk. already there's pushback to the potential of new federal gun laws in the states highlighted on your screen. for example, state lawmakers in wyoming, texas, and tennessee proposed outlawing any enforcement of these laws. that's nullification, pre-civil war talk. and by the way, sheriffs in kentucky and oregon have said no to enforcing them. these are people saying i'm going to break the law by not enforcing federal government law. in mississippi the governor asked his stat
of congressional opposition to the president, it was no sweat for nra president david keene to dismiss the president's initiatives as nothing but a grab bag of liberal feel-goodies. >> this is all sort of makes you feel good, but, in fact, it doesn't do much. >> he's confident saying that because the nra has spared no expense in quarterbacking all research on firearms and their impact on society. that is when they're not using their resources to target the president's daughters. in a new ad calling the president an elitist hypocrite for sending his daughter to a school with armed guards. an ad "the washington post" fact checker awarded a whopping four pinocchios. far from being elitist the relatively small force of unarmed security guards at sidwell is not unusual for a school of its size. moreover, the ad also suggests that obama rejects out of hand boosting security at schools when in fact his proposals include provisions that would provide funding for more school security. the nra, lawyers, guns, and money all in one powerful package. let's get right to our panel now. joining us is
to hear from wayne lapierre, head of the nra and taking a quote, defiant tone, and prepared to attack not just the proposed assault weapons ban but the universal background check. he plans to go hard against that, as well. which is interesting, molly. that was the one proposal that folks thought you could get some support of both sides with a universal background check. >> i think it's still the case that you may see some support for -- from republicans for something like background checks. this is something that polls at 90% with the public as a whole but they're not going to have the backup of the nra and i don't think it's too surprising nra still opposed to any form of gun control. i actually thought that wayne lapierre's testimony which i have also seen is interesting because he seemed to back off some of the more incendiary rhetoric of other forums, most notably, the initial press conference lashing out at the left and the media and everybody else and peek like the hecklers in the hearing and don't speak for the republican party and don't speak for the nra but it's sort of a pie

rhetoric from the right t national rifle association, the nra ramping up its fight and defending its new ad featuring the president's daughters. >> it wasn't about the president's daughters, what it is about is the fact that this whole debate is how to keep children safe. we believe that every parent ought to be able to be comfortable knowing that their children are safe and if that requires armed security, it's as good for the working man as it is for the president. >> joining me from washington is nbc news capital hill correspondent kelly o'donnell. linds yay graham, his i'm confident that there will be bipartisan opposition and then roy blunt says that this is the president trying to curbs the rights of middle class americans. >> reporter: certainly we don't expect anything coming from the republican-led house so the pressure really falls on the senate democrats. and what we expect is that when they come back next week, of course we have got the inauguration and then senior aides tell us they plan to meet with the democrats within the senate to talk about the president's proposals and to
the president has one major fight on his hands, the nra labeled him a hip toe p po krits and called out his daughters who receive secret service protection. yesterday senator ted cruz accused the president of exploiting the murder of children to push through gun control legislation and then there are the real nuts out there. a movement of people who say that the sandy hook tragedy was a hoax. the real purpose was to create a political environment to take away all our guns. the opposition is intense, the american public is largely on board with at least some of the president's agenda. in a new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll, more than half, 56%, say laws covering the sale of firearms should be stricter. so what realistically can the president do? david corn is washington bureau chief for "mother jones," joy reid is managing editor of thegrio.com, and both are msnbc political analysts. joy, how large should he be looking? >> i think the president needs to go in with a large package obviously, but when you talk to individual lawmakers, particularly on the house side, you get the sense two
